What can you get for $3 these days?

A handy precision screwdriver set that includes a magnetic pickup that is what!

Our Hacker Everyday Carry (HEDC) Giveaway is going to be well-rounded. Not only will you receive some fine electronic hacking equipment but you will also have the pleasure of having in your possession a $3 screwdriver set. I included one of these because when you need a #0 Phillips nothing else works like the real thing.

Don’t be concerned though. We will continue to add a plethora of products to our bag. Even though this $3 set is exciting it will not be the top of the heap when it comes to our HEDC contents.

Zero!

How appropriate is it for the first thing in the Hacker Everyday Carry (HEDC) to be a Zero? There is a programming joke somewhere in there if you look hard enough.

The Raspberry Pi Zero W kit has everything you need to get started with the Pi Zero W. The Pi Zero W is small enough to be used in all types of portable projects.

The specifications are pretty impressive.

  • 802.11 b/g/n wireless LAN
  • Bluetooth 4.1
  • Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)

Like the Pi Zero, it also has:

  • 1GHz, single-core CPU
  • 512MB RAM
  • Mini HDMI and USB On-The-Go ports
  • Micro USB power
  • HAT-compatible 40-pin header
  • Composite video and reset headers
  • CSI camera connector

One example use is the PoisonTap. It uses the Pi Zero to pull info from a locked computer through a USB port. You can see the full project plan here PoisonTap

Hacker Everyday Carry Giveaway

The Everyday Carry

There has been a recent increase in the use of bug-out-bags, pocket notebooks, carrying objects in your pocket for zombie survival, and just carrying around useful stuff where ever you go. Some people plan for a major apocalypse while others plan for more sensible things like going three days without take-out food or having a notebook and pen with you at all times.

Then there is the minimalist who is counting the number of extra grams they are carrying around so they keep it light. Really light.

While some others just like to carry knives, lots of knives.

Everyone has their own idea of what they need to carry on a day-to-day basis. It might be nice to have a Swedish Steel Fire-starter and a 37 function multi-tool on your keychain. It might be a lot nicer to have a bag of everyday hacker tools you could whip out at your local coffee shop or in your break-room at work.

Needful Things

What we need is a Hacker Everyday Carry (HEDC).

BSides Chattanooga is going to build an HEDC to give away during the first BSdiesCHA event. We are going to spend every waking moment searching out the most useful and coolest tools to stuff in a bag that some lucky person will walk away with at the end of the day. What could be in our HEDC?

Just about anything.

Here is a list of the things we have already considered for our bag of wonder.

  • A cool bag (not in the bag of course, but the bag has to be cool)
  • Mini-flashlight with lots of lumen options
  • USB penetration tool
  • Electronic toolkit
  • USB injection tools
  • Multi-tool
  • Bluetooth dongle
  • YubiKey
  • USB Hub
  • Powerstrip
  • Something from the Pi family
  • Mini-keyboard
  • Superglue
  • USB battery pack
  • Duct tape
  • USB case (for you array of USBs)
  • Monofiliment
  • Tactical gloves
  • Mini drivers
  • Those star and hex drivers you can never find when you need them
  • Pry bar
  • Waterproof case
  • Tactical belt
  • Notebook
  • Pocket pen
  • Smart key loop
  • Surge protector
  • Wireless hack tool
  • Portable firewall
  • A watch
  • Wallet
  • Titanium spork

  • Adapters
  • Lock devices (only to be used by qualified and licensed individuals)

Seriously though, will we include everything on this list? Sadly no but we will do our best to build a great bag. Let us know what you would like to see in an HEDC.
